Christmas in a Small Town
WHAT IS THERE TO DO AT “CHRISTMAS IN A SMALL TOWN?”
WELL, WE’RE GLAD YOU ASKED!
Ice Rink: Bigger and better! Our 40’X50’ rink this year will be almost twice as big as last year’s--and holds 50-60 people at a time! That means more skaters and less wait time! $5 for 20 minutes; new sessions begin on the half-hour and on the hour. Hours will be Thursday: 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Friday: 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Saturday: Noon - 9:00 p.m. School groups are scheduled Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. as well.
Christmas Movies: Hazard/Perry County Tourism and Classic Theater will be showing free Christmas movies! Bring a chair, bring a blanket, bring the kids and get in the holiday spirit! We’ll post the schedule and titles closer to the dates of the event.
NEW! Snow Globe: Use your own camera or cell phone to take advantage of a great photo opportunity for up to 6 guests--just enter, pose and take home a great photo souvenir from our 15-foot high snow globe. Cost is $5 per 5 minute photo session.
Giving Trees: Children 12 and under (and they must be PRESENT) may take one item from each giving tree. Those who want to participate will line up this year at the Triangle beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday; at 5:00 p.m., they will be escorted up and down Main Street to visit each tree. If the group is extremely large, we will split them into two groups and start on opposite sides of the street.
Chicks Christmas Village: It’s a tradition! The Chicks provide free gifts for children age 12 and under that visit their village. The village is located at the shelter next to the amphitheater on Saturday afternoon and opens at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Christmas Parade: Saturday, December 9, 4:00 p.m., Main Street Hazard, led by Santa himself. Be there! If your organization would like to participate in the parade, please contact Betsy Clemons at 439-2659.
Carriage Rides: Back by popular demand...and they book up EARLY! Contact Kristie Bryant at 436-6360 to book your carriage ride NOW!
Food and Craft Vendors: This year we are adding a tent for food and craft vendors. Since this is a fundraiser, vendors for this event CAN BE “for-profit” businesses and independent enterpreneurs. Vendors must pay a $25 fee per table. You may contact Robin Brashear at email@example.com
Photos with Santa: Immediately following the parade, Santa, Mrs. Claus and possibly even Santa’s elf will be available at City Hall to pose for pictures.
Storywalk: Storyboards of “The Polar Express” will be displayed in windows of local downtown businesses.
NEW! Parade of (Car) Lights: Here’s a unique way to get in the spirit--decorate your car, truck, motorcyle, whatever your mode of motorized transportation--and drive it through our Parade of (Car) Lights on Thursday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. Lineup for the parade will be at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. After the parade, the vehicles will be parked near the Triangle to allow people to vote for their favorite. The vehicle with the most votes will receive “The People’s Choice” Award!” Winner to be announced at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Triangle.
NEW! Gingerbread House Displays: This is something you can do as a family prior to the “Christmas in a Small Town” weekend. Create your own gingerbread house and bring it to the tables in the Triangle on Saturday no later than 2:00 p.m. on Saturday to display. Again, people will be asked to vote for their favorite and the gingerbread house with the most votes will receive “The People’s Choice” Award! Winner to be announced at approximately 8:30 p.m. Anyone who wants to keep their gingerbread house must pick it up no later than 9:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
NEW! Song Request Booth: Do you remember paying your dime to the Jaycees to hear your favorite Christmas song played over the loud speakers on Main Street? In hopes of rekindling a little bit of the spirit Christmases past, we’ll be hosting a “Song Request Booth.” But we have upped the price per song to one dollar--inflation, you know!
NEW! Cookie Decorating: Rudy’s Bakery will be hosting a cookie decorating party! Come on down and let your kids decorate their own Christmas cookies with icing and sprinkles! They’ll be lots of other things going on at Rudy’s too! Check them out. We'll post more specifics as we receive them!
