The RDPC is bringing AWR 147 Rail Car Incident Response to Hazard, KY beginning on Aug. 25, 2019, 8 a.m..

Rail Car Incident Response

This eight-hour awareness-level course is designed to increase the knowledge of first responders in recognizing and characterizing the different types of rail cars, potential leaks, and courses of action to be taken based on initial site assessment. The course will increase participants’ knowledge of safety and hazardous conditions that may exist at the scene, and will allow them to become familiar with safe practices adopted by the railroad industry. This course has been developed by The University of Findlay and is delivered in an instructor-led format.

Registration Deadline

All participants must register by Aug. 11, 2019, 5 p.m. to ensure their spot in the course.

Cake Decorating Class @ HCTC Tech Campus

We have added an additional Cake Decorating class! Are you interested in cake decorating, either as a hobby or an aspiring baker? We are offering a Beginner class, Thursday August 29th, 6-8:00 pm on our Technical campus. Our Instructor will teach basic cake decorating and give tips to help create beautiful cakes. The cost of the class is $40.00 and that includes the needed supplies and you get to take home your cake! It will be an 8″ round stack cake with buttercream icing, similar to the picture. Sip and Paint Fundraiser @ Fairway Grille - Country Club

The Care Cottage will be holding a Care to Paint Fundraiser Sip & Paint at the Fairview Grille located at the Hazard Country Club on August 29th from 6 to 8 pm. We will be painting the Mason Jars hanging on the tree in autumn colors.

Tickets are $30 per person and a cash bar will be available.

This is an adult event, we will be hosting a family friendly event later in the year.

Per WYMT:

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky State Police say applications are being accepted for the agency’s next academy cadet class.

Police said in a statement that the historic class will be the 100th since the agency was created in 1948. The academy class is set to begin next May. Interested applicants can apply at the Kentucky State Police website.

The site includes information about the application process as well as requirements and disqualifications.

Training at the academy in Frankfort lasts 25 weeks and includes more than 1,000 hours of classroom and field study.

Police say application materials must be submitted by Sept. 13.

Levisa Fork PaddleFest @ Prestonsburg Tourism

Experience the Appalachian Mountains up close and personal. Enjoy a unique float down the Levisa Fork River in eastern Kentucky. The 8+ mile kayaking adventure will take you through the first established town in eastern Kentucky. Join us the fourth Saturday of May-Sept. for a paddling excursion unlike any other! Tickets are $15 and include lunch and shuttle service. Registration begins at 8:30am with kayaks hitting the water at 9am. Battle of Leatherwood @ Battle of Leatherwood

We have several treats for the public scheduled this year. The replica of the Hunley Confederate submarine will be here throughout the weekend. The string band Unreconstructed will play on Saturday and Sunday, and for the ball. Our often-requested muscian Steve Ball will play period music and discuss the history of the songs. We will have two Abraham Lincolns– one throughout the weekend (Ancil Davenport) and available for photographs, and one (Dr. Greg Waltermire) from the Kentucky Chautauqua speakers bureau.

Activities on Friday, October 26, 2018 are open to the public. Many schools bring children as a field trip. This will include special Education Day events beginning at 9 a.m. Teachers can get more information about the activities or reserve a space for their class by emailing our Education Director, Tudy Cody at charissecody@yahoo.com For information regarding the reenactment contact Chairman Kerry Crutcher at (606) 653-8591 or kerry@tvscable.com

The events are all free and open to the public. The reenactment kick off will be on Saturday, October 27, at 9 a.m. when the camps open to the public. There will be demonstrations throughout the day. We have a Ladies Tea at noon. The main event is a battle which takes center stage at 2 p.m. with the re-enactment of the “Battle of Leatherwood.”  The Battle will be followed by a Heritage Ball at historic Stuart Robinson/Cavalry College Campus in Letcher, KY at 7 p.m. We will perform Civil War music and call dances. Everyone is welcome.

The action wraps up on Sunday, October 28, with the camps opening at 9 a.m. A church service will be held at 10 a.m. Another “Battle of Leatherwood” will be held at 2 p.m.
